This past year I worked at a school / safe house in the Dominican Republic. The last weeks of the school year I was crocheting with the girls. They were so excited about it, they gladly gave up their recess time to be able to crochet! =)
I asked the girls what they would like to crochet. I thought about a cute key holder, a purse, or something like that. But, to my surprise they wanted to learn how to make a 'tubi'. A tubi is a hair net which Dominican ladies use when they went to a salon to get their hair straightened. They wrap their hair around their head in a certain way, put the tubi on, twist it. And voila, your hair will stay straight, you can even sleep with it. And that is what the net is actually meant to be used for, to keep your hair straight during the night. But many women like to have their hair out of the way (which I can understand with the tropical temperatures there) and they wear the tubi during the day. They usually decorate it with a pretty flower.
I didn't have a pattern for a tubi, so I just tried out some things. This is what I came up with:

Here's the pattern for the flower:
On the last school day I gave a hairpin with a crocheted flower to all the girls. I'd asked each girl what her favorite color was, and made the flower in that color.
